2010 Vancouver Olympics - The Place to Be
By JR Kavanagh
Once every four years, the eyes of the world turn to rest on one particular town or city: the site of the World Olympics, where the action will be. Next year, in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the international spotlight will be on Whistler, home to Blackcomb, top skiing destination of the world for more than 10 consecutive years now.
It is the first time for Vancouver to host a Winter Olympics, along with Whistler as the venue. This is not the first time, however, that Vancouver will host an international event because it has already done so during the World Fair Expo of '86. As one of the top cities in which to live around the world and as one of the fastest growing economies in Canada, it is with certainty that Vancouver will meet up to the challenge. Being used to such excellent standards in its facilities and a high quality of life among its people, Vancouver will have no problem at all hosting the prestigious World Olympics for the very first time.
It will also not be an unusual thing for so many people from different countries and cultures to come together in Vancouver, although it can be quite overwhelming that they are, in fact, the best athletes of the world and the best sports people of their time. In the 127 years of its existence, Vancouver has been the melting pot of an ethnically diverse population of more than two million people. You see this in the sacred totem poles in downtown Stanley Park, in the koi gardens and pagodas of the West side, and in the ethnic restaurants of the East Van side. You will feel it in the breath and pulse of the diverse, talented people who have helped build Vancouver to what it is today.
All delegations of visiting athletes would he happy to note that aside from skiing, hockey wins hands-down as a favorite sport of all true-blooded Canadians. Locals are die-hard Vancouver Canucks fans. There are other sports in the field like baseball, football, and soccer, and health buffs can always enjoy the fresh air and natural trails of Stanley Park for some jogging and warm-ups.
If your visiting Vancouver for the first time taking a tour, either a bus one that leaves from downtown or a private guided Vancouver Limo Tour is an especially nice way to see the city in all its splendor. Traveling around in style is always a fun way to explore a new city.
Boats are another fascination with Vancouverites. Sail boats, yachts, cruise ships, you name them, they have it here. Coal Harbor refreshes you with the sights of boats and sails, while Vancouver itself will impress you as the major seaport for all ships coming from Alaska. This is truly another side of the world you have to see.
Another must-see which could fall in time with the 2010 Winter Olympics would be the Annual Dragon Boat Festival in False Creek during the Chinese New Year. Expect some grand fireworks, and many other festivals and parades all year round.
With so much awaiting you in the Vancouver Olympics of 2010, you should book your hotels and of course, car rentals well in advance. There will be so much traffic, unusually heavy for the Vancouver streets and business as usual for traffic on internet sites. With all eyes on the 2010 Olympics, hundreds of thousands of Olympic tickets will be reserved and sold online in preparation for the main event. If there's another main event you should eye, it's a one-in-a-lifetime limousine ride through downtown Vancouver and all the way to Whistler where history will happen in a matter of months.
